BLOCK NEWS WIRE MAY 2009

May 26th 2009
Another crazy night at Wolfpack!!! From Silverlake ShoAir John set a ridiculous pace up to the top of the Cahuenga Pass. Down the hill to Griffith Park and a regrouping at the AM PM on Riverside. At the time we were unaware that the vatos picking up a case of Bud Lights weren't talking about riding bikes when they said they could beat us. They stumbled into their SUV and drove off only to come back 2 minutes later. The dialect was slurred as neither of the two were coherent to make a complete sentence. We roll as a group of nearly 20 from the parking lot unaware of them following us. Roughly 4 miles later we hit Eagle Rock headed to Colorado and there is a ton of yelling in the back of the group. Loud enough to hear over a cranked up ipod. As we look back over our shoulders we see the same SUV pinching one of the riders between a car and headed for us. We changed direction immediately and head back on the sidewalk with tree and light post protection. They pass and flip a U-turn and head back toward the group throwing full beer cans as the pass. Another U-turn and back again. Thank god - no guns, but full movie scene none the less. Then miraculously LAPD drives by. 20 riders flag them down and 2 more vatos get to occupy some county funded housing for the night. No one was hurt but it was a intense brush with reality.  Heads up and helmets on always. You never know what is out on the streets of LA!

On his way home to Woodward West from Cincinnati our friend, Coco Zurita stopped by the Block Shop to tell us about his results and new website. Coco spends half the year in his native Chile and half the year living at Woodward West while hitting X-Games and Dew Tour contests in BMX Vert. This past weekend he took a solid 5th behind the likes of Simon Tabron and Chad Kagy at the ASA Tour. Below are a few links to familiarize to yourself with Coco. You will hear a lot about him in the near future!

Cory Nastazio & 8Mile stopped back by The Block Shop today to pick up the first round of IssuezInc tee shirts. This run is available only at the Nasty Jam in Tehachapi on June 6th. Go to IssuezInc for more info on the shirts, the Jam and random acts foolishness that only Nasty could bring and get away with.

Bicykillers never disappoints! Last night, big climb over Multiview to Hollywood. Then to Venice, over Sepulveda through the tunnel, and back to the NOHO Station. The rides get longer, harder  & faster every week.
The rest of the team headed to New Mexico for this weekends ABA National. We'll post up some pictures and results as soon as we get word. Products link will fill shortly. We just got a few more of the frame pads and the designs simply kick ass. Pads are available now.
Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend and don't forget why!

CYCOLOGY-The Lancaster Ride. Last night another great ride in perfect weather. The group keeps growing and the rides are more fun each week. Tom Boonen beat the train at Roubaix. We decided to stop and wait. Check out the pictures.
Now - off to Bicykillers!

Last night the trip to LA was well worth it. Wolfpack Hustle cruised at a mere 23mph average from Hollywood - Santa Monica - Downtown LA - Hollywood. Over 40 miles covered in less than 2 hours on the streets of LA.

Tomorrows Lancaster All City Ride will be much slower paced. Looks to be a fun route. Plan on leaving the Lancaster City Park & Ride  Wednesday @ 8:00pm

What has two thumbs and is tired from WOLFPACK --- This Guy!!!

MAY 18th 2009
Austin Mabery finally got his profile semi updated. We'll be updating all of the rider profiles as we receive the info. The team is headed to Albuquerque New Mexico this weekend for the next round of ABA Nationals. Post race report in a week.

Good local MTB group ride on trails off of Godde. Hot weather near 100 degrees by late morning. We got to watch the high wire trapeze artists stringing controversial power lines. That is real work! The helicopter made 4 trips while we regrouped taking tools, supplies and a ladder back and forth on a hook. Pretty impressive compared to us pedaling around the canyons. Shot the whole ride with the helmet cam and will post a video sometime later this week.

MAY 14th 2009
Another great night of local riding. The 30mph winds in the evening might have kept a few people home last night. Once the sun set and we rolled out at 8:00pm it was a nice light breeze. The All City Route was pretty cool. Spoke cards made the ride legit. Threads for The Lancaster Ride are on both Midnight Ridazz & LA Fixed now. Click Spoke Card for more pics from this past Wednesday nights ride.

This Saturday-May 16th MTB RIDE
Meet at the Aqueduct Parking Lot on 60th Street West (Godde Hill Road - Just South of Ave N) at 7:45am & ride promptly at 8:00am. This ride is set up to get a number of riders familiar with the local trails. The ridge runs from Godde to Highland High School, and from Ave P to Elizabeth Lake Road. Tons of trails and fun for all skill levels.

History time... In the early 1990s Block pads were the rage in BMX. Remember the plaid, paisley, graffiti, metallic, etc pads??? Well nearly 2 decades later we're back. This time we probably won't bring the headbands back - who knows??? Sublimated frame pads now in stock and ready to ship. New designs lately. Ask your shop to stock em or you can order direct for $20 including shipping. Call or e-mail immediately or wait another week for our online store. Tons of new products on the way including tees & hats.

Rushing out of here to hit the Santa Clarita Ride tonight. Last night Wolfpack was a Monster. Hit all of the bridges in Downtown LA at speed. Picture from the bridge on Riverside. More pictures tomorrow. The route for Wednesday's Lancaster ride will be City Park - Valley Central - Jet Hawks Stadium -  Lancaster Blvd - Antelope Valley College - AV Hospital - Lancaster City Park. It is the All City Route. Should be a good one!

Cory Nastazio stopped by today to approve shirts for his new site: IssuezInc.com.
With the recent mention in bfd.com, everything took off a little quicker than he had expected. Now clicked up with Block for printing and his boy 8mile, this thing is going to take off quick. It is pretty much rated R but what do you expect from Nasty.  Click here or on the picture to see round one. Tons of ideas in the works so stay tuned!!!

Frank Sandoval was pretty happy to hit the tunnel on Sepulveda Thursday night. Only to find that 46-16 is pretty spun out on the descent. Roadies are tucked and coasting by as you shred your knees and spin 170rpm. 9:00pm Thursdays, Bicykillers meets in North Hollywood. Good hard fast paced ride this week over Sepulveda to Staples Center, then return Hollywood Blvd to Cahuenga. Another 42 miles in the books. Looking forward to the nice hot weather and long rides!

Big group ride, 16 total. Had a good ride to the Eastside, mostly bike paths and lit bike lanes. No one in the group had ridden this direction and the ride was a huge success. Click on right to see photos of ride. Next week - new route. Typically 20 miles starting at 8:00pm for the Lancaster City Park - Park & Ride 10th West & K-8.

The streets of  Los Angeles felt the wrath of Team Block.  Frank found the bike paths a little monotonous and wasn't afraid to raise the pace with 50,000 lumens blazin the trail. Frank along with Rich, Trent and David set an amazing pace leaving the start point 30 minutes late and catching the group at mile 40. After a total regroup and refuel at the 50 mile mark Team Block got on the front and dictated a painful pace. After the last regrouping with 35 miles to go a selection of 7 riders went off the front. All 4 of  Team Block along with 3 others from Midnight Ridazz/Wolfpack. The Dark Century was not a race, not by any sense of the word. But just as we do at every ride we raised the bar. We were brought up hustlin' and that is what we do! Thanx to LA Fixed, & Leslie for putting a kick ass ride together!

5/5/09

Another crazy night at Wolfpack! Just a couple of miles out of Tangs ShoAir John and Rich entered yellow split traffic and nearly avoided an incident. LA's finest must not have appreciated the move and pulled the group just off the back over to anti up 4 red light violations to the chase group. Regrouped at the bike path at the base of Dodger Stadium just as the park was emptying and proceeded to drill it up the hill to The Rose Bowl. Never a dull moment. Working on some riding video now. Stay tuned!
