At the Block Shop we see a large number of the sports icons pass through. Some are BMX legends, national & world champions, NORA Cup (Number One Rider Award) winners etc. But there is not another rider in the sport as charismatic as our friend "Nasty"- Cory Nastazio. Last week Nasty stopped by in a panic on his way to the Dew Tour in Portland, Oregon. His stem was stripped and his flight was leaving in less than 2 hours. In traditional Block style we cut the stem off, installed a new one and he made his flight. Backing up let me explain why this took place. When Cory tightens his stem bolts he uses an 18" long cheater bar on the 6mm allen bolt and all but crushes the bars. Nasty depends on his parts to not slip when he is doing double back flips. Working on his bikes is typically an education in physics. Always a learning experience.
While up in Portland Nasty's bike was stolen. Getting ripped off gives you the most violated feeling and when you rely on your equipment to make a living it is even worse. Cory called The Block Shop's BMX Tech. Casey (aka: Cheeseburger) at home from Portland on Sunday night with his dilemma. "Dude - my bike got jacked and I leave for France on Wednesday morning" - or something along those lines. Nasty is sponsored by Rockstar & Haro. Even though The Block Shop does not carry Haro we have been working on Nasty's bikes for years. He had his new Haro frame and components shipped from Haro on Monday. That was the easy part. Cheeseburger got stuck with the stress. He had to order all of the components that Nasty had on the stolen bike. Going to France it was important to have the exact same bike he was used to. It took 5 separate overnight orders to get everything. As if Monday wasn't stressful enough, Tuesday was d-day.! EVERYTHING HAD TO MAKE IT!!! And it did! Jim Bauer personally dropped off parts at The Block Shop from the Odyssey team van headed up to Woodward West. Cheeseburger built up Nasty's bike from the ground up to his EXACT specs. He built the wheels on the custom Profile hubs that were ordered direct from Florida the day before. Pedals came from Minnesota, chain from Utah - it was a crazy day! Everything made it & the bike got built perfect. Nasty even said it was the best feeling bike he ever remembers having. Cory loaded his car, told us that he loves us, went back to Tehachapi to pack and is headed to France today for a contest.

BEST OF LUCK NASTY!!!

Cory Nastazio

With a nickname like “Nasty,” it’s pretty easy to see why Cory Nastazio is known as one of the bad boys of BMX.

After claiming silver at the 2000 X Games and gold at the Australian X Games in ‘02, Nasty’s accomplishments earned him the NORA Cup in 2002 and ’03. However, his career took an unexpected turn when, in April 2004, his Honda Civic crashed into a tree and he landed in the ICU for two weeks. But despite a hemorrhage on one side of his brain, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung, Nasty battled back and made a full recovery.

Since then, Nasty has returned to true form by winning the 2006 Extreme Thing contest and landing in the top 10 overall in the Dew Tour’s BMX dirt rankings in both ’05 and ’08.

When he's not throwing his trademark Superman seatgrab or the occasional double backflip, Nasty is always busy. And we're not talking just within the world of action sports either. Famous for his tattoos, spiky hair, and crazy personality as much as his skills on a bike, Nasty's popularity has landed him in the pages of Maxim, Rolling Stone and Stuff magazines.
