Do you have to win to feel
successful? This question comes after Team CrankSports.com (aka Team
Block) placed 16th in this year Eco Challenge in Fiji. 81 Teams started
the expedition but a mere 23 actually finished. Based in the jungles of
Fiji most teams had expected a warm tropical climate. This was not to
be. With the majority of the days having rain and the teams trudging
through mud and rivers it was some of the coldest days of the racers
lives. They say pack light and freeze at night - that was an
understatement. Most of the teams packed according to previous years Eco
Challenge experience and this worked against them. Gear boxes and food
supplies were few and far between and way out of the expected order.
Going to the start line without any knowledge of discipline order or
directions was so out of context. The racers were given maps of the
first few hours of the course with 10 minutes to go over them - then the
gun went off and the race was on. For the next 10 days teams would be
given maps and instructions for only the next section of the course.
This left so much in question and only the most resilient teams would
survive. It wasn't just a physical race it was a mental test. How much
can 4 people endure together without explanation?
We would like to thank our sponsor CrankSports.com for making the race
possible and getting us through nutritionally, we wouldn't have done it
without their support.
